The control of torque transmission to an automatic gearbox from an IC engine, involves a fluid torque converter and a parallel friction clutch between engine and gearbox, with sensors and central microcomputer unit, so that the friction forces in the clutch, and therefore transmitted torque, is controllable. The process used is adaptive control so that the slip is the minimum necessary and deviations from the ideal are eliminated by corrections. An iterative equation (similar to the over-relaxation equation in finite difference methods) links the clutch torque corrections with the new clutch torque value via a torque distribution factor. |
