A sintered self lubricating bearing is formed by spreading on a steel backing strip which may be copper plated, a powder mixture comprising metal powder up to 60 m and 3-5% by volume of a colloidal lubricant of at least one of graphite, M0S2 and BN, sintering in a protective atmosphere below the melting point of the metal, rolling and further heating the sintered strip. In an example a powder mixture containing by weight 75%-80% Cu, 10%-15% Sn and 8%-12% colloidal graphite of particle size varying from 5-60 m is sintered and bonded in cracked NH3 at 600 DEG -750 DEG C. to a steel backing strip. According to Fig. 1 (not shown) the mixed powder is applied to a steel strip 1 from hopper 9, levelled by spreader 13 and excess powder falls into a container 14. The strip is sintered in furnace 4, cooled at 19, cold rolled at 5 to a reduction of 80% and finally resintered at 6. In a further embodiment the second sintering furnace 6 may be omitted if the sintered strip is hot rolled under a protective atmosphere. Metal powder compositions based on Fe, Cu, Al and Ni may also be used with the following minor additions Zn, Sn, Pb, Cd, Sb, Be, Mn, In, Ni, P, Si, Ag, Te, Cr, Nb, Ti, Mo, Mg. |
