[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises organotin mercapto carboxylic acid ester halides of the general formula wherein n is 1 or 2; x is 0 or 1; m is 1-4; R is a hydrocarbon radical having 1-18 carbon atoms; R 1 is an organic group derived from a monohydric or polyhydric alcohol having 1-4 hydroxyl groups and 1-18 carbon atoms; R 2 is R or S-Z-(COOR 1 ) m ; X is halogen; Z is an alkylene radical carrying the S group α or # to a COOR 1 group, having 1-5 carbon atoms and optionally containing additional groups which may be carboxylic acid and ester groups, carboxylic acid salt groups and mercapto groups. The compounds are prepared by reacting an organotin halide in the presence of sufficient water or solvent to form a suspension or solution with a less than stoichiometric amount of a mercapto acid ester and an alkali or alkaline earth metal base in an amount stoichiometrically equivalent to the mercapto ester at a pH less than 10 and separating the organotin halide from the aqueous portion. The compounds are used as stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride resins, including any polymer formed at least in part of the group wherein X is H or Cl and having a chlorine content in excess of 40%. Suitable polymers are P.V.C. homopolymers, after-chlorinated polyvinyl chlorides, copolymers of vinyl chloride with other monomers, or mixtures of polyvinyl chloride with other synthetic resins. The stabilizers are incorporated in amounts from 0À5- 10% by weight and additional supplementary stabilizers, e.g. polyvalent metal salts, epoxy compounds and phenolic antioxidants may also be incorporated in the resins. Impact modifiers and plasticizers may also be added to the resin compositions. The compounds improve the resistance of polyvinyl chloride resins to deterioration when heated at 350-375‹ F. Mixtures of diorganotin and mono-organotin halides are particularly preferred. |
