Preparation of ergot and clavine alkaloids by aerobic submerged fermentation of Claviceps cultures. Inorganic non-toxic salts, preferably NaCl, are added to increase osmotic pressure of culture medium by 2-25 atm., preferably to a point where organism just begins to be affected. Five or ten times increase in yield of alkaloids.
