A gear-rolling machine incorporates two die rolls 38 and 40 driven through couplings 50 and 52 from a common motor 12, the lower roll 40 being adjustable vertically by a jack 42. The rolls are adjustable angularly relative to one another by an assembly 54. A sleeve located between a driving pinion 46 and a central output shaft is provided with internal and external splines of different angle, such that axial adjustment of the sleeve leads to angular adjustment of the roll 38. Each roll can be swivelled about both horizontal and vertical axes by virtue of a curved guide 20 and a vertical post 26 operated by a worm 32. A frame for supporting a workpiece W is mechanically coupled to the movable lower roll 40, such that the frame always moves half the amount of the roll. The linkage may be in the form of a linkage 82, 84 or a pair of racks, Fig. 5. The rack 134 is fixed and the rack 136 coupled to the movable roll, a central pinion 140 being connected through a rod 130 with a work-supporting spindle. Springs 152, 154 allow a degree of float to the spindle. The spindle is independently driven to rotate a workpiece before it is engaged by the rolls. Feeding and delivery shoots, together with piston-cylinder units, are provided for moving work blanks into and out of a working position. |
