The spring-loaded non-return valve has a piston (17) for releasing the closure bias of the valve in stages. An operating pressure supply has a first branch duct with a constriction (20) produced by the valve rim (21). This leads into the head of a cylinder contg the piston (17) so that pressure can be applied to the piston face (36). A second branch duct (30) leads into a port in the side of the cylinder. The port is initially covered by the piston side but is exposed after the piston is pushed out of the way, and full operating pressure is then applied to the piston. The constriction in the first branch is widened when hydraulic fluid flows back past the insert (19) and pushes it out of the way against the force of a biasing spring (24).
