Prodn. of monomeric 2-methylene (1,2)dihydroquinoline cpds. without formation of dimers The cpds. of formula: (where Z completes an opt. substd. 1,2-dihydroquinoline ring; R = opt. substd. C1-12 (pref. C1-4) alkyl or aryl gp), used in prodn. of methine dyes, are obtained by reacting heterocyclic quinaldinium salt with base free from hydroxyl groups (pref. of pKa-value at least 12), and a proton acceptor under anhydrous conditions (pref. below 30 degrees C) in a liquid free from hydroxyl groups.
