Apparatus for detecting an excess of air and other similar gases in the air/steam mixture exhausting from a steam sterilizer, comprises an upwardly extending condensing tube 11 having an inlet/outlet at its lower end through which it receives the air/steam mixture, an upright air collecting tube 17 communicating with the upper end of the tube 11, a condensate collecting tube 15 extending horizontally between the lower ends of the tubes 11, 17, and a temperature sensing thermocouple 12 disposed in the tube 11 in a position wherein it becomes bathed in air collected in the tube 17 when the tube is full, the collected air having a temperature lower than that of the sterilizing air/steam mixture. A condenser jacket 14 is provided round the tube 11 and condensate fills the tube 15 to a load 18 which controls the sensitivity of the device and is determined by the attitude of the device relative to the horizontal. Air collects in the tube 17 and this is relatively cool compared to the temperature of the supplied air/steam mixture and an excess of this air will effect the thermo-couple 12. In an alternative embodiment an invited U- shaped tube is used the lower ends being interconnected by a passage filled with condensate from a condenser round one of the limbs of the U, the thermocouple being positioned in the other limb at a height, above the level of condensate therein, which is adjustable to vary the sensitivity of the apparatus. |
