Surface treatment of glass articles

Compressive-stress surface layer is provided by process where surface of inorganic glass article containing alkali metal oxide and liquid medium containing an organic salt of an alkali metal different from the one contained in the glass, are contacted at raised temp. for time sufficiently partially to exchange alkali metal ion from glass with some alkali metal ion of the salt followed by removing glass article from liquid medium and cooling. Spec. silicate glass is used containing at least 1 wt.% alkali metal oxide esp. LiO2 in surface layer; liquid contains small amount salt, pref. carboxylate, acetate, in large amount non-polar and non-ionic organic vehicle.
