摘要
1,128,360. Friction clutches. RAYBESTOSMANHATTAN Inc. 19 Oct., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 46724/66. Heading F2C. A motor vehicle clutch friction facing comprises a spirally wound multi-ply strip having at least one ply 11 consisting of a woven fabric reinforced with fine metal wires, e.g. of brass, copper, zinc, lead, in at least some of the strands thereof, and a plurality of reinforcing plies 13 of thin, flexible, consolidated and condensed, dry carded spinning grade asbestos fibre web material of relatively high porosity, the fibres being interlocked with each other, said strip being impregnated with a cement comprising heat-hardenable-resin and friction material filler, and said facing being compressed to consolidate the convolutions and heat-treated to harden said cement. There are at least four reinforcing plies 13 to one ply 11. The plies 11, 13 may be folded into W or arcuate shape or, as shown, internesting chevron cross-section, or may be flat. The woven fabric ply 11 may be woven of yarn of asbestos fibre alone or with, e.g. cotton, wool, rayon, linen or jute. In a preferred form, where the warp and weft is asbestos, the metal reinforcing wires are in the warp and, if desired, also in the weft. The Specification includes examples and proportions of resins and friction material organic or inorganic fillers for the cement with which the woven fabric is impregnated, and of natural and synthetic rubber, rubber being preferably also included in the cement. Impregnation may be by passing the fabric through a cement solution and removing excess, as by squeeze rolls. The impregnated fabric is then heated to remove solvents without curing the resin. The Specification also includes examples and proportions of fibres and asbestos fibre/natural and synthetic carrier fibre mixtures for the asbestos web of the reinforcing plies 13, and of glass yarns for an open mesh woven glass fabric reinforcement 16 preferably included in the asbestos web. Such reinforcement may be accomplished by passing asbestos web and glass fabric through rolls causing the asbestos fibres to fill the glass fabric meshes and interlock with one another and with the glass fabric. Preferably the glass fabric is sandwiched between asbestos webs applied to each side. The asbestos web material, glass fibre reinforced or not, may be sized, e.g. by starch, the sizing being so controlled that the web is left in a porous condition. The cement for the reinforcing plies 13 is that used for the ply 11, and impregnation may be similarly effected. Dried plies 11 and 13 are combined into a sheet which is wound convolutely and cut into a plurality of coiled annuli of desired thickness. Each annulus is then subjected to heat and pressure, e.g. in a mould for densifying, to cause the cement to flow and permeate, to consolidate the convolutions, and to harden the resin binder and, if present, rubber. The resulting clutch facing is then finished, e.g. by surface grinding. Countersunk facing-attachment rivet holes (14) may be formed during moulding or by subsequent drilling.
