1332723 Composite packages UNILEVER Ltd 12 Jan 1971 [15 Jan 1970] 1376/71 Heading B8C A method of erecting a composite package of a plurality of containers 1 having substantially rectangular tops with outwardly extending rims 2 preferably having slightly radiused corners, and a carrier formed from a blank divided by two parallel fold lines 7 into a central panel 3 which covers at least a part of the tops of the containers, and two opposite side panels 4 the fold lines 7 being interrupted by slits 5 adapted to receive the rims 2 of the containers, comprises, maintaining the blank in position on top of the containers, folding each side panel downwards through an angle greater than 90 degrees towards the bodies of the containers and pushing the side panels downwardly and inwardly away from the centre panel. In this manner the rims of the containers are received in the slits of the blank. Arcuate slits 6 facilitate the folding of the side panels, the upper edges of which, as formed by the slits 5, engage beneath the rims 2. The width of a blank is slightly less than that across the containers from rim to rim. As shown in Fig. 2 a flat blank 3 is held down, by pressure members 11, on top of the containers while folding members 12 move downwards in direction A to bend the panels 4 around the rims 2 and open the slits 5 into which members 13 are inserted in direction B. The members 13 are then moved in direction C to press the panels downward until their upper edges, at the slits, snap below the rims 2. In a continuous process packaging machine the containers are carried on a conveyer 21, Fig. 4, having supports 22 for all sides of the containers which are preferably also supported at their sides by a pair of guide rails (35), Fig. 3 (not shown). Catches 25 on a conveyer 26 engage the blanks and move them at the same speed as the conveyer 21 while ploughs 24 progressively fold the side panels towards the container bodies at an angle of more than 90 degrees. A roller chain conveyer carries a number of pivotally mounted fingers 28 which are adapted to be pivoted downwards by guide rails 32, 33 and are adapted to approach, and retreat from, the container bodies. |
