1351197 Seismic energy generators COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE GEOPHYSIQUE 19 April 1971 [17 March 1970] 24569/71 Heading H4D [Also in Divisions H1 and D1] A spark discharge between electrodes 33 and 34 of an apparatus for under-water seismic prospecting is initiated by one or more exploding wires incorporated in a linear element 30 which is not ruptured when the wire is volatilized in the course of a discharge, the apparatus incorporating a supply of the element, guide means applying the element against the electrodes at least at the spark discharge instant, and means for driving the said linear element along its guided path to permit the renewal of its zone co-operating with the electrodes. The element 30 is preferably a woven tape of nylon or glass-fibres incorporating Cu wires from 0À2 to 0À6 mm. in diameter. In the form shown the apparatus comprises a body 21, containing a supply of tape and guide rollers, connected by three bars 24, 25 and 26 and resilient joints to a body 22 containing guide rollers and driving rollers driven by a pneumatic motor connected to input and output compressed air lines 37A and 37B. Body 22 is fitted with stabilizing fins 23 and also contains a space for used tape and a buoyancy tank. Ring electrodes 33 and 34, preferably of tungsten, are supplied by conductors 35 and 36 and are mounted on rubber cylinders 31 and 32 supported in members 31A, 31B, 32A and 32B which are apertured to slide on bars 25 and 26. The guide rollers are mounted on supports (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) which can be pivoted by pneumatic pistons to hold the tape away from the electrodes during the driving periods. A simplified apparatus (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) omits the latter pivoting arrangement. |
