The inside walls of X-ray treatment rooms, laboratories, etc are lined with tile sized pieces of sheet iron enamelled with a material that not only reduces the back scatter, quantitatively but also limits the radiation qualitatively to the low energy (soft X-ray) end of the spectrum. - This is simple light weight method of improving the X ray environment e.g. back scatter is reduced to 25% of that in an unlined chamber.
