Improved preparation of 1,4-dioxyanthraquinone. Title cpd. (I) is prepd. by the reaction of p-chlorphenol with phthalic anyhydride in the presence of sulphuric acid and/or boric acid, and also pref. in the presence of a boron trihalide and/or a boron trihalide complex. - Use of the boron trihalide catalyst improves rate, yield and purity of product, which is a dyestuff intermediate.
