Mild esterification procedure An acid, an alcohol and a catalyst (pref. 0.02-1 mole) are mixed in a (cyclo)-aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent boiling between 10 and ca. 100 degrees C, at below the boiling point, (esp 0-40 degrees C). - An almost quantitative yield of ester is isolated from the lighter phase after phase separation. - Advantages are (a) stoichiometric quantities (b) water does not have to be removed azeotropically or by a drying agent (c) low energy requirement (d) pure product without traces of toxic solvents (e) mild conditions suitable for sensitive reagents e.g. tertiary alcohols, allylic alcohols or MeOH.
