Thecoke is treated with gases contg. hydrocarbons the composn. and temp. being such that the hydrocarbons and/or their decomposition products deposit on the coke and/or react with constituents of the coke. A pref. gas mixture consists of hydrogen and a hydrocarbon eg. methane in such proportions that a part of the hydrocarbon splits up in contact with the coke into carbon and hydrogen. By use of a low reaction temp. a carbon black which is difficult to ignite is obtd. The gas mixture is heated to a temp. above that of the coke before admission, in order to obtain the maximum carbon deposit, and may also be pre-heated by contact with the discharged coke. Reactivity of the coke product is reduced, the sulphur content is lowered, and heat of the discharged coke is utilised.
