[Also in Division C7] A mixture of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, styrene, methacrylic acid, hydroxypropyl methacrylate and acrylamide together with cumene hydroperoxide is polymerized in benzyl alcohol. The resulting acrylic polymer containing free acid groups may be partially reacted with hexamethoxymethyl melamine to give a resin with an acid value of 28 mg. KOH/gm. Electrophoretic coating baths may be produced by neutralizing with 2-methyl-2-amino-propan-1-ol the acrylic polymer thinned to half the initial solids content with xylol or the partially reacted acrylic/melamine resin solution, the resulting clear solution being diluted with demineralized water to yield an opalescent dispersion of pH 9.5 to 10. |
