In a stuffer crimper including a member having walls forming a crimping chamber and having means feeding a yarn for crimping into one end of the chamber to be folded over and crimped against a core of previously crimped yarn therein and to advance the core along the chamber to a discharge point, a sensing device having a lower portion disposed entirely, within the chamber and extending around the upper end of the core and forming a recess into which the core extends and having a central opening through which the yarn is extracted from the upper end of the core the sensing device being adapted to slide along the chamber in response to the rise and fall of the core.
