Apparatus for examining the thermo-oxidative properties of elastomers (plastic and elastic materials) and for determining the effect of additives on thermostability during mechanical stress comprises thermostatically controlled sealed kneading unit 2 for the sample, the kneading unit having a gas inlet and gas outlet, motor 1 for driving the kneading unit, and a gas circulating circuit connecting the inlet and outlet and including in series means 10 for circulating oxygen or air through the kneader, gas drying means 11, means 12 for automatically replenishing the oxygen in the circulating gas stream, means 6 for absorbing decomposition products from the kneader and means 7 electrically coupled to the absorbing means for electrically measuring changes in the quantity of decomposition products. Means 7 may measure electrical conductivity. The apparatus may include means 5 for measuring the mechanical force required for kneading the sample. |
