Gasification of carbonaceous solids - by continuous process involving pyrolysis,hydrogen generation and hydrogenation

Mfr. of useful gaseous prods. (esp. methane) from coal and other solid organic matter. Comprises breaking solids down to particle size 1.0 inch. entraining solids together with particulate char in turbulent non-oxidising gas stream (pref. H2, CO and/or CH4) and heating to 600-1500 degrees F in a pyrolysis reactor with residence time of 1 min., sepg. and compressing gaseous prods. to 500-1500 psia, heating the compressed gases to 800-1400 degrees C followed by contact with H2 (pref. in presence of a hydrogenation catalyst) to methanate the prods. The H2 used is obtd. by heating the pyrolysed solids at 1000-1800 degrees F in a degasification zone and/or by partial oxidn. of part of the char solids (obtd. from pyrolysis zone) by treatment with steam at 1500-2500 degrees F/300-600 psia to yield synthesis gas from which H2 may be sepd.
