Novel process for prepn. of protein using methanol as the C source by fermentation of strains of the microorganisms Bacillus, Pseudomonas or Flavobacterium, or their mutants or variants, at pH 4.9-9.0 with a source of N and with a methanol concn. in the logarithmic growth phase of the microorganisms of 10-150 ppm based on the culture suspension. Pref. 50-100 ppm of methanol is present, 0.3-0.6 vol. of air per vol. of suspension per minute is pref. added and the suspension is agitated at 50-210 revs. per minute. The agitation may be achieved mechanically, hydrodynamically or pneumatically. The concn. of methanol is controlled by measuring the liberation of CO2. Suitable sources of Nare KNO3, (NH4)2 SO4, (NH4)3PO4, NH3, urea or soya flour. The incubation temp. is pref. 20-45 degrees C, esp. 30-37 degrees C. Suitable microorganisms are Bacillus subtilis or polymixa, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Prod. is useful as foodstuff or forage for animals. The dried prod. contains much less crude residue than in known prods. and only 5-10 wt. % nucleic acids. |
