The pallet loading and unloading unit esp. for bottle crates provides rapid operation. A gripper head (5) is rigidly coupled with the travel gear (50a) of a horizontally movable travelling carriage (50) and projects beyond it by more than half its length in the direction of the pallet placement point (3). The guide rails (50) for the carriage overhang the pallet placement point free of cross-bars by an amount which is less than half the width of the placement point. The pallet placement points (2, 3) have delivery and discharge conveyers (14, 15) for linear throughput of conveyance at right angles.
