The sliding plate mechanism shuts off the top openings in vehicles, rail trucks etc., and comprises a series of plates which can be secured one above the other in a chamber at one end of the opening. The plates (1) fit together by hooked profiled sections (3) cooperating to form labyrinth seals. On opening, the plates slide sideways, and separate above the stowage chamber (28), in which they are stacked by conveyor chains. Elastic sealing components can be fitted inside the hooked profiled sections.
