<p>An agitated-media mill of the batch, circulation, or continuous types in which the elements (18) of a comminuting media randomly interact in response to an agitator (12) having motion relative to the comminuting media to comminute a process mixture. Prior to the present invention, a need existed for a method and structure for establishing random motion of the comminuting elements, and for opposing the tendency of certain process mixtures to rotate as a solid with the agitator thereby establishing relative motion between the agitator and the comminuting media to comminute the mixture to be processed. In one embodiment, the radial members (62) of the agitator include non-circular baffle portions (64) that establish vertically oscillating flow of the mixture to increase the random interaction of the elements and improve comminution of the mixture. In another embodiment, the agitated-media mill includes a baffle (20a) or plurality of baffles adjacent the inner wall of the comminuting vessel and arranged transversely with respect to the flow of the process mixture. The baffles, which can be of varied shape depending on the particular media used, redirect the comminuting elements to increase the random interaction of the elements throughout the vessel and also oppose the solid body rotation of the process mixture to provide improved comminution of the mixture. </p> |
