The path curve (24) along which the finishing tool has to move in relation to the workpiece is defined by programmed reference points (R1-R4) and, lying between them, determined intermediate points (S1-S7). The roughing tool, moving together with the finishing tool in relation to the workpiece in the common control axis (Z), is to cover a path (23) fixed by the programmed reference points (P1, P2). To be able to synchronise the movement of the two tools, the programmed reference points (P1, P2) of the path curve (23) for the roughing tool can, if need be, be shifted to the closest intermediate point (S2, S5) or the closest reference point of the path curve (24) for the finishing tool. In addition, for the path curve (23') for the roughing tool, the intermediate points (T1-T7) are moved to the intermediate points (S1-S7) of the path curve (24) for the finishing tool. The deviation of the path curve (23') covered by the roughing tool from the programmed path curve (23) is allowed, since it is not necessary to maintain the roughing contour exactly. Since no changes are made to the programmed data for the path curve (24) for the finishing tool, it is ensured that the required finishing contour is maintained. <IMAGE>
