PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for beta- methylcarbapenem derivatives which are useful as antibacterial agents in an industrially advantageous way by reaction between an alpha-halopropionamide compound and a specific compound. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I [ring B is a (substituted)benzene; R<1> is a (protected) hydroxy-substituted lower alkyl; X is O or S; Y is O, S, methylene or a (substituted)imino; Z is a (substituted)methylene], e.g. 3-{(2R)-2-[(3 S,4R)-3-[(1R)-1-t-butyldimethylsilyloxyethyl]-2-oxoazetidin-4-yl]-spir o[2,3-dihydro-4 H-1,3-benzoxadine-2,1'-cyclohexan]-4-one. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction between an alpha-halopropionamide compound of formula II or a salt thereof and a compound of formula III (L<1> is an eliminable group). |
