PURPOSE:To exactly measure thickness of a plate by oscillating up and down a plate material which has been inserted into a plate material pinching means, detecting a variation of pinch thickness, and detecting the minimum value of the pinch thickness. CONSTITUTION:When a plate material W is inserted between a supporter and a contact 77, a measuring instrument detects the plate material W. In this case, when the plate material W is oscillated up and down by using the upper part of the supporter 73 as a supporting point, the contact 77 moves up and down, and a measured value of the measuring instrument is varied. Accordingly, the minimum value of its measured value is determined as plate thickness of the plate material W. In this way, based on its plate thickness, a position of the upper table is controlled in accordance with a bending angle, etc., and each necessary operating part is controlled.
