A fluidised bed furnace, for removing surface paint has a fluidised bed formed from sand or similar material. A combustible mixture of gas and air is injected into the fluidised bed from below and is burnt on the surface of the bed. The gas is only partially burnt and flows to an after-burner chamber where complete combustion occurs. The fresh gas and air mixture is supplied to the fluidised bed by nozzle tubes (5), installed in the floor region of the furnace in a bed formed of relatively large fragments with the nozzles directed upwards to the layer of sand forming the fluidised bed.
