A process for degrading a feedstock consisting of plastics and/or other polymer material to liquid hydrocarbons. The feedstock is mixed with solid particles and optionally with oil and/or water, and is cracked in a hammer mill type of apparatus, in which the heat required for the cracking is supplied mechanically. The treated mixture is then subjected to a separation to separate out at least a substantial part of its content of solid particles. The cracking is preferably carried out in a hammer mill at or near the atmospheric pressure, at a temperature in the range of 200 DEG C to 500 DEG C, and with a peripheral speed of the hammers of the hammer mill in the range of 15 to 75 m/s.
