PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce variations in an optical characteristic to fluctuations in gap length between panels and in panels when mass-producing liquid crystal display devices. SOLUTION: A space between a pair of glass substrates 1, on which a transparent electrode 2 and an elliptically polarizing plate 7 are formed, is filled with a STN(super twisted nematic) liquid crystal composition 6. In the elliptically polarizing plate 7 consisting of a polarizing plate and a phase difference plate, an angle between the direction of polarization axis of the polarizing plate on the side of outgoing liquid and the longitudinal direction of the liquid crystal molecules adjacent thereto is set at 50-60 degrees, and an angel between the direction of polarization axis of the polarizing plate on the side of incident light and the longitudinal direction of the liquid crystal molecules adjacent thereto is set at 20-30 degrees. In such a manner, it is possible to reduce non- uniformity of contrast to fluctuations in the panel gap. |
