SUBSTANCE: cleaning is performed by treating raw material with aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide in presence of (i) nitrogen-containing basic and/or alkaline reagent taken in amount corresponding to 0.2 to 4 mole per 1 mole hydrogen sulfide or mercaptan sulfur and (ii) water-soluble or variable-valence metal salt or complex in the form of aqueous or water-alkali solution taken in amount corresponding to 0.002-0.25 g of metal ion per 1 t or raw material. Preferably used salts are: ferric, cupric, manganese, cobalt, or nickel chloride, sulfate, or nitrate, and preferred complexes are those of copper(II), cobalt, or nickel with alkali metal or ammonium pyrophosphate. Aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide contains 1-3 mole H2O2 per 1 mole of hydrogen sulfide sulfur and 0.5- 1.5 mole H2O2 per 1 mole of mercaptan sulfur.
