The method involves controlling an actuator by a controller, and determining a signal, which is obtained from distance measurement. A shift finger is positioned along a selected path by the actuator. Conclusions are transferred to a shifting gate (10) in the controller, where the shifting gate is defined by a shift track and a neutral track (11). A determination is made whether geometry of an automated manual transmission corresponds with values of the geometry stored in the controller when variation arises in specific characteristics of ratio of a gear.
