A seal for a bottle cap 5 comprises a central imperforate portion 17 separated from an outer annular portion 18 by at least three arcuate cuts. The seal is made from plastics, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, a polyamide or a combination of paper and plastics foil or latex coated paper. The portion 17 is .forced against the planar portion of the cap 5 by a punch 20 and the annular portion 18 is torn from the portion 17 and forced against the skirt 6 of the cap. In an alternative embodiment the punch comprises fingers (52), Fig. 6 (not shown), arranged in a circle, which slide down the inside of a shaped cylinder (40) and force the seal into the cap. The cap and the seal are preferably heated to between 50‹ and 100‹ C. to cause adherence therebetween. |
