Headings D1F and D1W A molecularly orientable synthetic continuous filament yarn 3 made from a thermoplastic polymer is passed through a heat-stretch zone formed by rolls 1, 2, heated draw pin 8, and crimp rolls 12, 15. Roll 12 is movable between selectively variable crimping and non-crimping positions. It is resiliently urged away from roll 15 by spring 23 but urged into the crimping position when cylinder 22 is connected to the air supply 33 through three way valve 29 which is alternately turned on and off by timer 31. A controller 35 varies the pressure of the air supplied to cylinder 22 and thus the amplitude of the crimps. The apparatus can thus produce a continuous, uniformily or variably cimped yarn, or an intermittently, uniformly or variably crimped yarn with a regular or irregular interval pattern. The latent crimp produced by rolls 12, 15 may be developed by passing the yarn on a conveyer 42, Fig. 6 (not shown), through an oven. |
