A non-aqueous solution of acrylonitrile polymer or of acrylonitrile copolymer containing up to 20% of copolymerizable monomer, is wet spun into a coagulating bath comprising essentially cumene and the polymer solvent, the bath being kept at 30‹ to 70‹ C. the filaments then being drawn in a bath comprising essentially linear chain paraffins have 10 to 16 carbon atoms in the molecule, the temperature of the drawing bath being at least 30‹ C. higher than that of the coagulating bath. The coagulating bath may also contain up to 25% by weight of linear paraffins having 10 to 16 carbon atoms in the molecule. The amounts of polymer solvent and cumene in the drawing bath are kept below 10% by weight. The filaments may be drawn 5 to 15 times their original length at a rate between 50 and 200 m/min. to give a low dirt absorbing highly lustrous product with a soft hand. |
