[Also in Division C1] In a method of producing glass fibre by uniting a plurality of individual fibres drawn from a melt and in which a quantity of the fibres is formed into a "package" a computer is used to classify the package according to the diameter of its fibre, which it does by comparing the weight of the package (measured by a load cell) with information of the weight of packages having fibres of prescribed diameters, the package being segregated in response to the output of the computer and conveyed to an end finding station. In the embodiment described the average diameter of glass fibre 30 wound on a tube 28 from a plurality of strands 26 drawn through orifices in a bushing 10 is controlled by manual or automatic adjustment of the bushing temperature or the tube speed prior to winding a package, in response to any error in the previous package, as indicated by the computer. The computer is a digital one 40 to which there is provided, in addition to the weight from a load cell 47, a speed signal (comprising the number of once-per-revolution pulses counted in five minutes) and the winding time (from the condition of a traverse motor relay which is interrogated once per second). Reference values and tolerance are supplied from a data panel 44 in the form of information of all the parameters related to the fibre required. The computer serves a number of stations, as also does the load cell, which is traversed by means 53 ... 57 controlled by an operator. The computer also gives a print-out of relevant information and illuminates lamps 69 which indicate the range in which the package weight lies in order that the operator may segregate the package accordingly and direct it to the appropriate end finding station. The bushing 10 is heated by the passage of electric current through it. The strands are not twisted but are sized so that they adhere together. The tube 28 may be driven at a constant speed or at a speed which decreases as winding proceeds to provide substantially constant draw speed.
