A moulded body comprises pieces of inorganic material stuck together with an exothermic bonding agent to form a porous structure and impregnated with a resin. The inorganic material is preferably one of silica sand, sea sand, mountain sand, pulverized stone powder or asbestos powder. The bonding agent, which comprises 0À2 to 5 parts by weight based on 100 parts of the inorganic material, may be a thermosetting organic material or an inorganic material comprising a mixture of one of sodium silicate, potassium silicate, sodium zirconate, potassium zirconate, sodium aluminate and potassium aluminate with one of silicon powder, ferro-silicon powder or a powdered silicide. The impregnating resin is preferably solventless and may be epoxy, unsaturated polyester, polystyrene, polymethacrylate or polymethylmethacrylate. The moulded body may be shaped and used as pavement, moulds, jigs, turbine blades and building elements and as an electrical insulant. Reinforcing metal gauge may be incorporated in the mouldings. |
