A magnetic filter comprises two pipes 1, 2 of ferromagnetic material each of which contains a filtering grid 6 of ferromagnetic material and is surrounded by an energizing coil 12 for inducing a magnetic field in the grid, the pipes being arranged side by side and connected by yokes 3, 4 of ferromagnetic material to form a magnetic circuit. As shown each grid comprises a number of strips 9 secured in parallel spaced relationship by non- magnetic bars 10. The grids are contained in and held together by a sleeve 11 and gratings 7 extend across the pipe at each end of the series of grids. A plurality of coils 12 are provided and are held in position by spacer rings 15. The filter assembly is surrounded by a ducting 16 and a fan 17 is provided for cooling purposes.
