The normal cadmium base material, with or without the addition of an extender, is pressed into a porous body after mixing in a small quantity of pure, submicroscopically divided particles of silicon dioxide. This quantity may be between 0.5 to 5.0 percent by weight. Conventional extenders such as graphite and/or nickel or iron powder may be incorporated.
