PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing an alkyl phenyl ether in higher reaction rate and selectivity using an inexpensive and easy-to-handle alcohol as etherifying agent.

SOLUTION: The method for producing the alkyl phenyl ether comprises carrying out a reaction between a monohydric phenolic compound and the alcohol, specifically carrying out the reaction in the presence of a catalyst having both acid and base functions under the subcritical or supercritical condition for the alcohol.
