1,199,418. Oil filter. PUROLATOR Inc. 14 Aug., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 371811/67. Heading B1D. An oil filter comprises a spiral coil 7 of resinimpregnated paper through which oil flows axially, the convolutions of the coil being spaced apart 'by radial distances of 1/100 to 1/1000 of the coil length. In Fig. 2 (not shown) two layers of paper with opposed herring bone embossments are wound together. In Fig. 5 (not shown) dimples in the two layers are staggered. Alternatively, a flat sheet of paper is wound between convolutions of embossed paper, or corrugated metal strips space the convolutions of flat paper at coil ends. The housing 1 has a screw-on end plate with an anti-drain valve 6, and coil 7 is spaced within so that unfiltered oil fills the inside and outside of the coil. The lower end of coil 7 is supported by a moulded spider 9, 10 whose central plug may incorporate a bypass valve. The paper is 0.010 to 0.050 inch thick. |
