Abrasion-resistant electro-plated metal coating is applied on mouldings, particularly sheets or films of polystyrene or copolymers in which polystyrene is the main component. the mouldings are first immersed first in an alkaline lye containing a reduction agent for a few minutes at increased temperature below the boiling temperature of the alkaline lye. They are then rinsed with water, heated for a few minutes with a warm or hot chromosulphuric acid and neutralised with alkaline lye. After thorough rinsing with hot to boiling water the mouldings are sensitised conventionally, activated and thinly metal-coated without external electricity feed. This coating is thickened by the known electro plating method with the same or another metal. Specifically, the reduction agent is hydrazine hydrate. |
