A flexible strip 3 is passed along a helical path around at least one cylindrical chamber 1 having at least one air inlet 5 and a plurality of air outlets 4 through which air is forced to dry and support the strip 3, and at least one guide member 2 also constructed to support the strip on an air cushion, arranged such that the strip 3 extends between the chamber 1 and guide member 2 in a path which is tangential to the paths around the guide member and chamber. The apparatus may contain two, three or four parallel chambers, with one or more guide members positioned at the strip inlet and outlet and intermediate all the chambers (Figs. 9-15, not shown). The chambers and guide members may be arranged to dry both sides of the strip (Figs. 12-15). The parameters of the air supply may be different for each of the chambers, which may differ in length and diameter. The path of the strip around the chamber may be directly connected to the path around the guide member, i.e. the path between them is effectively of zero length. |
