Apparatus for shunting single or trains of rail vehicles comprises a traction member 2 which is connected with trolleys 3 adjacent vehicle rails 1 and having pivotable arms 4 adapted to drivingly engage a vehicle wheel, the member 2 being driven by a motor 5 through a gear-box 6 and a mechanical, electromagnetic or hydraulic friction clutch 7, slipping of the clutch due to the shunting vehicle contacting a blockage causing the motor 5 to reverse. A built in time delay prevents reversal of the drive due to temporary blockages. The signal from the slipping clutch may be used to indicate a " track occupied" situation. The arms 4 may be pivoted into their in-use and out-of-use positions by hydraulic, pneumatic, electromagnetic or mechanical means. |
