1,187,783. Strengthening glassware. UNITED GLASS Ltd. 28, March, 1967 [31 March, 1966 (2)], Nos. 14354/66 and 14355/66. Addition to 1,024,468. Heading C1M. In the strengthening of glass containers, they are treated while at a high-temperature with a liquid solution of an organic compound of titanium which decomposes: with heat into two materials, one of which is an organic compound of titanium of high decomposition temperature while the other is a volatile compound of titanium and: a substantial proportion of the vapour is produced, the containers being subjected to a heat treatment so that a reaction occurs between the, titanium compounds and the glass at at least the surfaces of the containers. Preferably, the containers are treated with a spray, or mist of the solution between the forming, machine and the annealing lehr. The heat treatment, given is. to maintain. the containers at at least 550‹ C. for at least five minutes. The liquid solution is prepared by reacting titanium tetrachloride with a carbonylcontaining organic compound such as an ester formed by reaction of ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl or iso-amyl alcohol with acetic; propionic or butyric acid and. the solution comprises 20-60% by weight of titanium tetrachloride. Specification 1,187,784 is referred to.
|
