A closure for an orifice in a thick metal wall 2 or deck plate, e.g. an oil tank in a cargo tanker, comprises a metal cover plate 4, a continuous gasket 10a in a channel on the under side of the cover plate for sealing the plate against said wall, and clamping means comprising a rotatable shaft 9 passing through a circular aperture in the cover plate near the rim thereof, having a control handle 6 fixed to the outer end of the shaft and a cam latch 13 rotatable with the shaft to engage the under side of the metal wall to compress the gasket between the cover plate and the wall. The cam latch is slidable on a narrower portion 12 of the shaft and maintained angularly fixed to the shaft by a screw 14 engaging a channel 16. Shim washers 17, 18 may be situated on the shaft above or below the cam plate to adjust the vertical position of the cam latch and are held in the shaft by nut 19 and cotter pin 22. The face of the cam engaging the underside of the wall 2 is sloping with respect to the normal to the axis of the shaft 9, and to obtain a large bearing surface between the cam and the deck plate 2 the axial tilt of the shaft 9 with respect to the cover deck is made the same angle as the ramp slope of the cam so that the upper surface of the cam at the point of engagement with the deck is substantially parallel to the lower surface of the deck plate (Fig. 3, not shown). The control handle 6 can have an aperture 8 to receive a tommy-bar and can have a pointer co-operating with indicia on the cover to show whether the latch is in the open or closed position (Fig. 1, not shown). Seals 15 are arranged around the shaft 9 and a sealing ring may be inserted between the neck 5a of the handle 6 and the plate 4. This sealing ring is then compressed as the latch is closed.</p> |
