Halocarboxylic acid halides. One mole of straight or branched chain, saturated, C2-C6 monocarboxylic acid anhydride is mixed with 2 moles halogen at 60-100 degrees C, cooled to room temperature and mixed with phosphorus trihalide and halogen or phosphorus pentahalide or thionyl halide or phosphorus oxyhalide and then heated to 80-120 degrees C. Bromocetyl bromide is a favoured product.
