A gear shaving machine adapted for plunge shaving has a workgear supporting table 51 arranged to be rocked in timed relation to the infeed and return movements to effect crowning of the gear G. The table 51 is pivotally supported at 52 on a vertically adjustable knee 22 and is adapted to be rocked to a variable extent by a link 85 connected to an adjustable eccentric 90 carried by a rotary gear 92 having its own drive motor (not shown). Normal infeed and return motion of the knee 22 and table 51 together with the gear G relative to the tool T is effected by the straightening of a toggle linkage (38) 44, 48. The lever 44 is two armed and is connected at one end to an operating fluid pressure cylinder unit 62, 64 and at its other end to a dashpot device 74 controlling the speed of movement. Adjustable abutment screws 68, 82 limit the extent of pivotal movement of the toggle lever 44 and thus also determine the depth of infeed. Rocking may be effected (under the control of suitably placed switches) during a dwell period at maximum depth of feed or partly during infeed and return movements or alternatively may take place continuously several times during infeed and return movement. |
