Exchanger has a fixed heat exchange mass inside a shell with fluid inlets and outlets. Alternate flows, co- or countercurrent, of warm and cool fluid are passed through it, and the exchange mass is in the form of elements of small thickness, pref. laminated wire mesh. Shell fits about elements leaving small space between for flow of fluid between element and inlet and outlet orifices.
