[Also in Divisions H3-H5] A matrix of magnetic storage cores is formed by providing a layer of magnetic material on the surface of a wire core, arranging a plurality of the layered wire cores in parallel and inserting them into a mould material which is subsequently hardened to affix the wires, cutting off the ends of the layered wire cores which project from the hardened mould material, and removing the wire cores so that ring-shaped magnetic cores remain embedded in the hardened mould material. An additional manufacturing step is to remove the hardened mould material so that separated magnetic ring- shaped cores are left, each core being strengthened by an internal support initially provided on its core wires. Each storage core may consist of two concentric layers of magnetic material each having a different coercive force, the two layers being applied consecutively on the surface of the core wires during manufacture. A conductive layer may be provided under the magnetic material which remains in position when the wire cores are removed, the conductive layers 12, Fig. 5, being subsequently interconnected by conductive films 13 deposited on the surface of the hardened mould material. The magnetic storage cores may be thin magnetic films which are made circularly anisotropic by passing a current through a wire core while the magnetic layer is applied. The mould material may be either a resin or a metal of low melting point. The wire cores may be of a copper alloy such as beryllium copper or phosphor bronze and are removed by applying a mixture of chromic and sulphuric acids. If a concentric conductive ring is provided for each storage core, the ring is formed of a material, such as gold, not affected by the wire core removal process. Alternatively the conductive rings may be applied afterwards by plating, sputtering or evaporation, with or without an insulating layer between the conductive rings and the magnetic material.
